Ideal Mouse for Getting Things Done
Date:01 February 2012
After many months of use my respect for this mouse remains high.
Superficially it looks good with the improved scroll wheel from Logitech's more expensive mice adding a touch of class.
It has a well judged weight and falls easily to (the right) hand fitting best without a wrist-rest. That said it's light enough to be finger driven for those (like me) who use a wrist-rest which keeps the hand in one place.
The M500 has just the right balance of features. This includes my preferred thumb-only forward/back buttons unlike the older ambidextrous MX300 which had one button either side of that device. The buttons are well sized and prominant enough to be easily used without being mistakenly triggered.
The notched/freewheel scroll-wheel is an unexpected boon. Like all Logitech's better scroll-wheels the normal notched mode is positive with a nice action that requires 'just enough' force. I had not expected to use the freewheel much but I'd now struggle without it. The wheel runs very free making moving through 100's of lines of spreadsheet or code a breeze. In many instances it's easier than grabbing a scroll bar. The scroll-wheel isn't perfect however. The left-right slope of the mouse can restrict side-scroll to the right and the scroll-wheel click requires a little too much force. This is only likely to impact heavily CAD users when performing 3D-rotations. Neither are show stoppers, even for CAD users, but would be worth addressing in a future version of the mouse.
Being a laser mouse accuracy is very good in general and CAD use. I've bought a number for general CAD users and all are very happy.
Overall I've been very impressed. Initially I baulked at spending circa £30 on a mouse for work but it has provided a great balance between comfort, well chosen features and accuracy. For those commited to alot of 3D work I'd suggest a proper 3D controller from 3Dconnexion but for anyone else the M500 is a great device.

My mouse of choice
Date:26 July 2011
Excellent ergonomics, the mouse fits like a glove. It is not too heavy as some top of the range wireless models can be and is a pleasure to move around.
It invites the hand to rest comfortably on the curved body, while at the same time allows fine movements by the fingers alone. It can easily be grabbed by the fingers to be repositioned on the mouse mat.
The hand sits at a slight angle on the mouse for a more natural position of the wrist, which has helped alleviate my wrist pain caused by constant mouse use.
The build quality is very good and the click action responsive. The option to switch to fast scrolling is highly enjoyable, even if fast scrolling gets sometimes out of control. But then it is easy to revert to precise scrolling. It is the prefect mouse for my work with CAD programs: accurate and enjoyable to use.
I hope Logitech will not sideline its wired mouse range in the future, as I find wireless mice too heavy for my taste.

Comfortable, practical and functional
Date:20 May 2011
A decent multi-purpose mouse, the M500 is good for everyday office and practical use on application software, internet browsers and so on, and has ample functionality to serve as a basic gaming mouse.
The fast scrolling feature is certainly useful for long documents and web pages, or you can simply use it like you would notched scrolling if you get used to it - note that it does take some getting used to, but once you've got it then it's very convenient.
In fast scrolling mode, jolts to the work surface, heavy typing or sharp mouse movements might cause the scrollwheel to jump slightly. This isn't a significant problem as such jolts are unlikely and you can simply switch to the notched scrolling mode in any case, especially in games when you are unlikely to use fast scrolling.
Some time is needed to get used to the horizontal scrolling: being slightly off-centre can cause you to scroll horizontally rather than click, but this is relatively easy to get used to and the horizontal scrolling can come in handy.
Ergonomically it's very comfortable (note that it's designed for right-handed people), with the left and right mouse buttons feeling comfortably shaped and easy to click, and the navigation buttons (backward and forward) placed conveniently above the thumb grip, as you'd expect.

Great mouse, Great price
Date:12 March 2011
Having used this mouse for several hours now, I am very impressed by the quality and feel of this mouse. It is hard finding mice that are comfortable for me, as I have very large hands and very long fingers, this mouse is perfect for me. It feels really great in my hand, my fingers don't drag on the side and the mouse fits perfectly in my palm. However if you are left handed this is not the mouse for you.
The buttons feel really great to click, and the forward/ back buttons are positioned perfectly, they don't get in the way and you don't accidentally click them.
The scroll wheel is very cool, I was sceptical about it, but having used it for a while i find it very useful as I often work with large word documents and pages of C++ code. It really makes scrolling much easier, once you get used to it.
The software is very simple to navigate, and i really like the interface. It's very simple and fast to change settings on the mouse. The drivers downloaded very quickly and installed very quickly.
For the price of this mouse you can't go wrong. Give it a try!
